All Details
I am the Insulin Plant, nature's green guardian of balance. My broad, lush green leaves with striking purple undersides are traditionally revered for their potential to help regulate blood sugar, adding both medicinal value and tropical beauty to gardens.
I am a perennial herbaceous plant, scientifically known for its purported anti-diabetic properties, and is grown both as a medicinal herb and an attractive ornamental foliage plant.
Native to the tropical regions of the Americas and the Caribbean; now widely cultivated in gardens across South Asia, especially in India, for its medicinal use.
Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Prefers high humidity.
Thrives in partial shade to filtered sunlight. Can tolerate morning sun but should be protected from harsh afternoon rays.
Prefers warm, humid conditions (20-30°C); sensitive to frost and cold drafts.
Plant in rich, well-draining potting mix. Can be easily grown in pots or as ground cover in shaded beds. Space 30-45 cm apart.
Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Botanical name: Costus igneus (also known as Costus pictus or Spiral Flag); Family: Costaceae.
Toxicity is not well-documented but caution is advised. It's best to keep it out of reach of pets as it is a medicinal plant with active compounds.
Moderate; contributes to indoor air humidity and adds oxygen-producing greenery.
Leaves are used in traditional medicine, often consumed fresh, for potential blood sugar management; attractive, low-maintenance ornamental plant with spiral growth.
Susceptible to spider mites and mealybugs, especially indoors; leaf burn from direct sun; root rot from overwatering.
Perennial in zones 9-11; can live for several years, growing 30-60 cm tall. Often propagated easily from stem cuttings.
