All Details

I am Shyam Tulsi, the deep-hued guardian of devotion. My striking purple-tinged stems and dark green, often purple-veined leaves are rich in aromatic oils, releasing a sharp, peppery, and intensely medicinal fragrance. My flower spikes are a vibrant purple, making me a visually and olfactorily powerful presence in the sacred garden, embodying protection and healing.

I am the purple-pigmented variety of Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), known as Krishna or Shyama Tulsi. I am revered alongside Ram Tulsi but am often considered to have a stronger, more pungent aroma and a higher concentration of certain medicinal compounds, making me particularly potent in Ayurveda.

Native to the Indian subcontinent, cultivated for millennia. Thrives in warm climates and is integral to Hindu tradition and Ayurvedic medicine.

Prefers consistent moisture but is slightly more drought-tolerant than Ram Tulsi. Water when the topsoil feels dry. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent stem and root rot.

Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) to develop the deepest purple pigmentation in stems and leaves and to maximize essential oil production.

Loves warmth (20-35°C). Sensitive to frost and prolonged cold. Grows as a perennial in the tropics and as an annual elsewhere.

Plant in well-draining, fertile soil. Excellent for containers, traditional Tulsi pots (Vrindavan), or garden beds. Pinch back regularly to promote bushiness and delay flowering, which concentrates energy in the leaves.

A light feeder. A monthly dose of diluted liquid fertilizer or occasional top-dressing with compost is sufficient. Over-fertilization can dilute its potent aroma.

Botanical name: Ocimum tenuiflorum (purple type); Common names: Krishna Tulsi, Shyama Tulsi, Purple Holy Basil; Family: Lamiaceae.

Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is safe and sometimes used in herbal supplements for pets. As with any plant, moderation is key.

High (for an herb). Like Ram Tulsi, it is renowned for releasing oxygen and antimicrobial volatile compounds (eugenol, etc.), believed to cleanse the air and create a positive microclimate.

Highly sacred in Hinduism, associated with Lord Krishna; considered a supreme adaptogen and blood purifier in Ayurveda; used for respiratory ailments, fever, and stress; strong insect-repelling properties; essential for daily ritual (puja).

Can be prone to fungal diseases like fusarium wilt and powdery mildew in humid, poorly ventilated conditions. Susceptible to aphids and whiteflies. May become leggy without enough sunlight.

Tender perennial. In ideal, frost-free conditions, it can live for several years as a small, woody-based shrub (30-75 cm tall). Commonly grown as an annual in temperate climates.

Everyday 8:30AM to 6:30PM
