All Details

I am the Sweet Tamarind, nature's own candy pod. My majestic, broad-canopied tree is adorned with delicate, feathery leaves and bears clusters of curved, cinnamon-brown pods. Within the brittle shell lies a sticky, dark pulp that is surprisingly sweet with only a hint of tang—a delightful contrast to my sour sibling and a treasured treat eaten fresh or in desserts.

I am a specific, sweet-fruited variety of the tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica), distinct from the common sour type. I am cultivated for my fruit, which has a high sugar content and low acidity, making it a prized fresh snack and culinary ingredient in sweets.

Believed to have originated in tropical Africa. The sweet variety is extensively cultivated in Southeast Asia (especially Thailand as 'Makham Wan'), India, and other tropical regions for its dessert-quality fruit.

Deeply drought-tolerant once established. Young trees need regular watering. Mature trees thrive in seasonal climates and can survive long dry periods, making them ideal for arid and semi-arid regions.

Requires full sun and thrives in open, hot locations. It needs intense heat and sunlight to produce the sweetest fruit.

A strict tropical tree. Thrives in hot, dry climates (25-35°C). It is highly heat-tolerant but sensitive to frost.

Plant in deep, well-drained soil. Requires a vast amount of space for its large, spreading canopy and extensive root system. Not suitable for small gardens. Often grown as a shade and avenue tree.

Generally low-maintenance. An annual application of compost or a balanced fertilizer during the growing season can improve fruit yield, but it is not a heavy feeder.

Botanical name: Tamarindus indica (sweet cultivar); Common names: Sweet Tamarind, Thai Sweet Tamarind, Imli (Hindi), Puli (Tamil); Family: Fabaceae (Leguminosae).

While the pulp in small amounts is not highly toxic, tamarind seeds can cause intestinal blockage if ingested. The plant is not considered pet-safe, and supervision is recommended.

Very High. As a massive, long-lived, evergreen tree, it is an exceptional carbon sink, provides immense shade, and helps cool and clean the air.

Pulp is eaten fresh as a sweet snack; used in beverages, jams, and premium desserts; the tree provides excellent, dense shade; valuable hardwood timber; a key species in agroforestry and soil improvement (nitrogen-fixing).

Susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soils. Can be attacked by scale insects and mealybugs. The falling pods and leaves can create litter. The tree is very slow-growing from seed.

Extremely long-lived perennial tree. Can live for over 200 years, becoming a massive, landmark tree. Grows 12-18 meters tall with a wide, umbrella-like canopy.
