Hello! I'm Heliconia, a dramatic and exotic tropical plant known for my stunning, brightly colored bracts that resemble the beak of a lobster or parrot. I bring a bold, architectural form and a vibrant splash of the tropics to any garden or spacious indoor area.

I'm a rhizomatous perennial prized for my large, paddle-shaped leaves and, most notably, my spectacular hanging or upright flower inflorescences. These aren't actually flowers, but brilliantly colored bracts (modified leaves) that hold the true, smaller flowers inside.
I'm a showstopper in tropical landscapes, perfect as a focal point or for creating a lush, jungle-like backdrop. I'm also a superstar in the cut flower industry, lasting for weeks in arrangements.
I am the primary food source for many tropical hummingbird species, which have co-evolved with my unique flower shape.

I am native to the tropical Americas, including regions of Central and South America, and the South Pacific.

I am a thirsty plant! Keep my soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. I require regular, deep watering, especially during hot, dry weather.
Good drainage is still essential to prevent rhizome rot. I thrive in high humidity.

I thrive in full sun to partial shade. For the most vibrant and abundant bracts, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
In very hot climates, I appreciate some afternoon shade.

I am a true tropical plant and am suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 10-13. I thrive in temperatures between 21°C and 32°C.
I am highly sensitive to cold and frost, which will damage my leaves and can kill the plant.

Choose a sheltered location with plenty of space for my large size.

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and enrich the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure.

Plant the rhizome at the same depth it was growing previously.

Water thoroughly after planting.

Maintain consistent soil moisture.

Apply a thick layer of organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Cut old stems and flower stalks back to the ground after they finish blooming to encourage new growth.

I am a heavy feeder. Feed me monthly during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a formula high in potassium to promote flowering.
Organic options like composted manure are also excellent.

Scientific Name: Heliconia spp.

Common Names: Lobster Claw, False Bird-of-Paradise, Wild Plantain

Plant Family: Heliconiaceae

Plant Type: Tropical Rhizomatous Perennial

I am generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, my large leaves can be a tempting chew toy, which is not advisable.

As a large-leafed outdoor plant, I contribute to a healthier environment by producing oxygen and providing habitat for wildlife.

Creates an unforgettable, dramatic display of colorful, architectural bracts.

Essential plant for attracting and supporting hummingbirds.

Makes an exceptionally long-lasting cut flower.

Adds a lush, tropical, and exotic feel to the landscape.

Fast-growing and can quickly fill a space.

Spider Mites: A common pest, especially in dry conditions.

Leaf Rollers & Caterpillars: Can chew on my large leaves.

Root Rot: Caused by waterlogged, poorly draining soil.

Wind Damage: My large leaves can be torn by strong winds; plant me in a sheltered spot.

Failure to Bloom: Often due to insufficient light, cold temperatures, or a lack of maturity.

I am a long-lived perennial in the right tropical climate. My clump will continue to spread and produce new flowering stems for many years. In non-tropical climates, I am often grown as an annual or in containers that can be brought indoors for winter.
