All Details
I am the Fiddle Leaf Fig, the architectural icon of interior design. My bold, upright form is defined by large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves with prominent veining. Each leaf is a sculptural statement, creating a dramatic, lush canopy that brings a touch of the tropical jungle and an instant sense of grandeur to any bright indoor space.
I am a tropical evergreen tree, Ficus lyrata, native to West Africa. I have become one of the most popular and coveted houseplants worldwide, celebrated for my striking foliage and ability to serve as a living focal point in modern interiors.
Native to the lowland tropical rainforests of Western Africa (Cameroon to Sierra Leone). Cultivated globally as an ornamental houseplant and outdoor tree in frost-free climates.
Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage. I am highly sensitive to both overwatering (root rot) and chronic underwatering (leaf drop). Consistency is key.
Requires bright, indirect light to thrive. Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but harsh afternoon sun will scorch the leaves. Low light leads to leggy growth and leaf loss.
Prefers warm, stable temperatures (18-26°C). Extremely sensitive to cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, and heating vents.
Plant in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Use a heavy, stable pot to support my top-heavy growth. Rotate regularly for even growth. Repot every 1-2 years in spring until mature.
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize in fall and winter.
Botanical name: Ficus lyrata; Common names: Fiddle-Leaf Fig, Banjo Fig; Family: Moraceae.
⚠️ TOXIC to cats and dogs. The sap contains compounds that can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and skin irritation upon contact or ingestion.
Moderate to High. As a large-leaved plant, it is effective at filtering common indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
A stunning statement plant that defines a room's aesthetic; excellent air-purifying qualities; large leaves add humidity to the air; can be trained into a tree form or kept bushy with pruning.
Notorious for leaf drop due to stress from moving, repotting, or changes in light/water. Prone to root rot from overwatering. Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and scale, especially in dry indoor air. Leaves can develop brown spots from overwatering, underwatering, or fungal issues.
Long-lived perennial. As a houseplant, it can live for many years with proper care, growing 2-3 meters tall indoors. In its native habitat, it can reach 12-15 meters.
