I am the Song of India, the cheerful, striped chorus of the foliage world. My upright, cane-like stems are densely packed with whorls of slender, pointed leaves that gleam with vibrant stripes of lime green and dark forest green, edged in a thin, creamy yellow. My bright, bushy form sings with color, adding a lively, tropical rhythm to any indoor space.
I am a highly ornamental, variegated cultivar of Dracaena reflexa. I am a popular, slow-growing evergreen shrub prized for my vividly striped foliage, compact and bushy habit, and resilience as a houseplant.
Native to islands in the Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Mauritius). The variegated form is extensively cultivated worldwide as a houseplant and tropical landscape shrub.
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess drain. Sensitive to overwatering and chemicals (fluoride/chlorine) in tap water, which can cause leaf tip browning. Use filtered or rainwater if possible.
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its intense variegation. Can tolerate medium light but may become leggy and lose some color vibrancy. Avoid direct harsh sun.
Thrives in average room temperatures (18-25°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Plant in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Ideal for containers and can be used in mixed plantings. Pinch back tips to encourage bushier growth. Can be grown outdoors in frost-free climates.
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing.
Botanical name: Dracaena reflexa 'Variegata' (often sold as Pleomele reflexa); Common names: Song of India, Song of Jamaica, Variegated Dracaena; Family: Asparagaceae.
⚠️ TOXIC to cats and dogs. Contains saponins which can cause vomiting, drooling, and loss of appetite if ingested.
High. Like other dracaenas, it is an excellent air purifier, known to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene from indoor air.
Striking, colorful foliage provides year-round visual interest; excellent air-purifying qualities; compact and bushy growth habit makes it perfect for tabletops, shelves, or as a floor plant; relatively low-maintenance.
Brown leaf tips from dry air, fluoride toxicity, or inconsistent watering. Leaf drop from overwatering or sudden temperature changes. Susceptible to spider mites and scale insects in dry indoor conditions. Can become leggy in low light.
Long-lived perennial houseplant. Can thrive for many years with proper care, typically growing 1-1.5 meters tall indoors but can be kept smaller with pruning.
