I am the Morning Glory Wel, the ephemeral painter of the morning. My slender, twining vines race across fences and trellises, covered in heart-shaped leaves. Each dawn, I unfurl a fresh profusion of vibrant, trumpet-shaped blossoms in celestial blues, purples, pinks, and whites, a daily celebration of light that closes by afternoon, only to begin again tomorrow.

I am an annual or perennial twining vine (primarily Ipomoea species) famed for my rapid growth, colorful trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in the morning, and prolific self-seeding nature. I am a classic cottage garden favorite for quick, colorful coverage.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Many species have been widely naturalized and cultivated around the world.

Keep soil consistently moist, especially during germination and active growth. Mature vines have moderate drought tolerance. Overwatering can reduce flowering.

Requires full sun (6-8+ hours of direct sun) to open its flowers fully. Blooms will not open in shade or on cloudy days, and the vines will grow leggy reaching for light.

Thrives in warm temperatures (18-30°C). Sensitive to frost. Grows as an annual in colder climates, perennial in frost-free zones.

Plant seeds directly in well-drained, average soil after the last frost. Soak or nick seeds before sowing for better germination. Needs a sturdy trellis, net, or fence to climb. Can become invasive; manage seedlings.

Too much fertilizer, especially nitrogen, promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers. A light application of a balanced or phosphorous-rich fertilizer at planting is usually sufficient.

Botanical name: Ipomoea spp. (e.g., I. purpurea, I. tricolor); Common names: Morning Glory, Kaladana; Family: Convolvulaceae.

⚠️ TOXIC to cats, dogs, and horses. The seeds, in particular, contain toxic alkaloids (lysergic acid derivatives) which can cause hallucinations, gastrointestinal upset, and agitation if ingested in quantity.

Low. Grown primarily for its spectacular, fast-growing floral display. As a fast-growing vine, it contributes some oxygen but is not a noted air purifier.

Provides extremely fast coverage for screens, fences, and arbors; produces a breathtaking display of colorful blooms every morning; attracts pollinators like bees and hummingbirds; easy to grow from seed.

Can become a highly invasive weed through prolific self-seeding. Susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and leaf miners. Fungal leaf spots and rust can occur in humid conditions. Flowers only last one day.

Typically grown as a self-sowing annual. In frost-free climates, it can behave as a short-lived perennial. Vines can grow 2-4 meters or more in a single season.
