Hello, architect of the tropical garden! I am the Triangle Palm, your structural and geometric masterpiece. I am celebrated for my incredibly unique, three-ranked leaf arrangement that forms a perfect triangular cross-section. I bring a bold, architectural form and a touch of modern elegance to any landscape, standing as a living sculpture of symmetry and grace.
I am a medium-sized, single-trunked palm tree, known for my exceptionally neat and formal appearance.
My most defining feature is the arrangement of my leaf bases. They grow in three distinct vertical rows, creating a three-sided, triangular trunk.
My fronds are long, feathery (pinnate), and arching, emerging from these three points to form a handsome, triangular crown.
I produce large, branched inflorescences of small, creamy-yellow flowers that emerge from below the leaves, followed by small, blackish-brown fruit.
I am a relatively fast-growing palm that provides a dramatic impact without overwhelming the space.
I am native to the humid, subtropical forests of Madagascar.
I have Moderate water needs. I prefer consistently moist, but never waterlogged, soil.
Water me regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. I am somewhat drought-tolerant once established but will look best with consistent moisture.
I enjoy high humidity.
I am a sun-worshipper! I thrive in Full Sun to partial shade.
I will develop the strongest trunk and most compact crown with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
I can tolerate some shade, but my growth may be less dense.
I am a palm for warm climates and am best suited to USDA zones 10-11. I can survive in a protected zone 9b.
I thrive in temperatures between 18°C and 29°C.
I am sensitive to frost and prolonged cold. Temperatures below -2°C can cause significant damage.
I am a perfect focal point for tropical, Mediterranean, or modern landscapes. I work beautifully in containers while young.
Plant me in rich, moist, well-draining soil. I am adaptable to various soil types as long as drainage is excellent.
My symmetrical form makes me ideal for lining driveways or pathways, or as a standout specimen.
Ensure I have enough space for my crown to spread, which can reach 10-15 feet wide.
I am a moderate feeder. Apply a continuous-release palm-specific fertilizer in the spring and summer.
Palm fertilizers contain essential micronutrients like manganese and magnesium, which prevent frizzle top and other deficiencies.
Fertilize 2-3 times during the growing season for best results.
Scientific Name: Dypsis decaryi
Common Names: Triangle Palm, Three-Sided Palm
Plant Family: Arecaceae
Plant Type: Evergreen palm tree
NON-TOXIC. According to the ASPCA, I am not known to be toxic to cats or dogs. My non-toxic nature and striking form make me a safe and stylish choice for pet-friendly gardens.
While all plants contribute to cleaner air, as a palm with a generous canopy of fronds, I am effective at absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, helping to purify the air around me.
Provides an unmatched, bold architectural form and a strong focal point.
Creates a tropical ambiance with a clean, geometric structure.
Produces flowers and fruit that can attract birds and other wildlife.
Relatively fast-growing for a palm, offering a mature look sooner than many other species.
Frizzle Top (Manganese Deficiency) - Causes stunted, necrotic new growth. Treated with a palm-specific fertilizer.
Potassium Deficiency - Appears as translucent yellow or orange spots on the oldest fronds.
Ganoderma Butt Rot - A fungal disease that can affect many palms, causing conks (fungal structures) to form on the trunk.
Root Rot - Caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil.
Leaf Spot Fungi - Can occur, especially in humid conditions with poor air circulation.
I have a moderate lifespan for a palm. Under ideal conditions, I can live for several decades, gracing a landscape with my unique form for many years. I grow at a moderate pace, reaching a mature height of 20-25 feet over time, and will be a long-term, captivating feature in your garden.
