Hello, tropical dreamer! I am the Phoenix Palm, your elegant and stately palm tree known for my graceful, arching fronds and rugged, textured trunk. Often called the "Date Palm," I bring a touch of Mediterranean elegance and tropical grandeur to landscapes, gardens, and large indoor spaces. I'm here to create an oasis of shade and beauty wherever I grow!
I'm a medium to large palm tree with long, feather-like fronds that arch gracefully from the top of my trunk.
My fronds are composed of many narrow, sharp leaflets that give me a fine, delicate texture from a distance.
I develop a thick, rugged trunk covered in old leaf bases that create a diamond-shaped pattern.
I'm dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, with females producing edible dates in the right conditions.
I am native to the Canary Islands, but I have been widely cultivated throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
I am drought-tolerant once established but appreciate regular watering during my first few years.
Water me deeply once a week during dry periods.
Mature trees can survive on natural rainfall in many climates.
I dislike waterlogged conditions, so good drainage is essential.
I am a sun worshipper! I need full, direct sunlight to thrive.
I require at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily for optimal growth.
I can tolerate some shade when young but will not reach my full potential.
I thrive in warm climates between 15°C and 35°C.
I can tolerate occasional frost down to -5°C once established, but prolonged cold will damage me.
I'm perfect for coastal areas as I'm salt-tolerant.
Choose a spacious location with plenty of room for my mature size—I can grow quite large!
Ensure well-draining soil; I'm adaptable to various soil types including sandy and rocky soils.
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant me at the same depth.
Water thoroughly after planting and stake young trees if needed.
Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Feed me with a palm-specific fertilizer that contains micronutrients like manganese and magnesium.
Apply fertilizer in spring and summer according to package directions.
Compost or well-rotted manure applied annually will also keep me healthy.
Scientific Name: Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm)
Common Names: Date Palm, Canary Palm, Pineapple Palm
Plant Family: Arecaceae
Plant Type: Outdoor palm tree
I am generally considered non-toxic, but my sharp fronds can cause physical injury. The dates are edible when ripe.
As a large tree, I'm excellent at improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while also providing shade and cooling effects.
Creates a dramatic focal point in landscapes
Provides excellent shade with my spreading canopy
Salt-tolerant, perfect for coastal gardens
Drought-tolerant once established
Long-lived and low maintenance
Fusarium wilt - A serious fungal disease that can affect me
Ganoderma butt rot - Another fungal disease that attacks the trunk base
Palm aphids - Can infest new growth
Nutrient deficiencies - Particularly magnesium or manganese
Leaf spot - Fungal issues in humid conditions
I am a long-lived palm! With proper care, I can thrive for 50-150 years, growing into an magnificent, mature tree that becomes a landmark in your landscape.
