Hey there, friend! I'm the Bottle Palm, your distinctive and charming companion that brings tropical elegance and unique character to your landscape. With my swollen, bottle-shaped trunk and graceful fronds, I'm here to create a conversation piece that's both whimsical and sophisticated!
I'm a slow-growing palm tree famous for my unique, swollen trunk that resembles a bottle, topped with a beautiful crown of arching, green fronds.
Gardeners and landscape designers love me for my extraordinary shape, compact size, and the instant tropical vibe I bring to any setting.
I'm perfect as a focal point, in containers, and for small gardens — anywhere you want to add tropical charm without overwhelming the space!
I originally come from the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, specifically Round Island near Mauritius, where I've evolved my unique water-storing trunk.
Water me regularly when young to establish my root system.
Once mature, I'm quite drought-tolerant thanks to my water-storing trunk.
I prefer deep, infrequent watering rather than frequent light watering.
I love full sun for 6-8 hours daily for the best growth and form!
The more sun I get, the better my unique trunk shape develops.
I can tolerate some light shade but thrive in full sunlight.
I'm comfortable in warm temperatures between 20°C and 35°C.
I'm sensitive to cold and need protection from temperatures below 10°C.
Choose a sunny, well-draining location with plenty of space
Dig a hole twice as wide as my root ball but no deeper
Plant me at the same level I was growing in the nursery
Water deeply after planting
Mulch around my base, keeping it away from the trunk
Provide wind protection for young plants
Give me room — I can reach 10-12 feet tall and wide!
Feed me with a slow-release palm fertilizer 2-3 times during growing season.
I particularly need magnesium and potassium for healthy growth.
I'm a light to moderate feeder — over-fertilizing can harm me!
Scientific Name: Hyophorbe lagenicaulis
Common Names: Bottle Palm, Buddha Palm
Plant Family: Arecaceae
Plant Type: Outdoor Ornamental Palm
I'm non-toxic and safe around pets, making me a worry-free choice for pet-friendly gardens!
I'm excellent at improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while my graceful fronds help filter dust and pollutants from the air!
Unique bottle-shaped trunk for dramatic landscape interest
Compact size perfect for small spaces and containers
Excellent drought tolerance once established
Creates instant tropical atmosphere
Potassium deficiency (orange spotting on older fronds)
Magnesium deficiency (yellowing along leaf edges)
Leaf tip burn (salt buildup or underwatering)
Cold damage (provide winter protection)
I'm a slow-growing but long-lived palm that can grace your garden for 50+ years, developing my characteristic bottle shape as I mature and becoming more distinctive with age!
