All Details

Greetings! I am the Foxtail Palm, a stunning and graceful tropical tree known for my uniquely textured, fluffy fronds that resemble a fox's tail. I bring a sleek, modern palm look and a touch of paradise to any landscape or spacious indoor area.

I am a single-trunked palm prized for my full, dense crown of arching fronds. Each frond is plumose (soft and feathery), with many leaflets growing around the stem in 360 degrees, creating that signature "foxtail" appearance.
I make a spectacular focal point in landscapes, lining driveways, or as a statement piece in large, bright atriums or rooms with high ceilings.
I grow relatively quickly for a palm and have a self-cleaning habit, meaning my old fronds fall off neatly by themselves.

I am endemic to a very small region in Queensland, Australia, where I grow on rocky slopes and sandy soils.

Water me deeply and regularly to establish a strong root system. Once established, I am moderately drought-tolerant.
I prefer consistent moisture, especially during hot, dry periods, for lush growth. Good drainage is absolutely essential, as I cannot tolerate waterlogged roots.

I am a full sun lover! I need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow strong and maintain my dense, healthy crown.
I can tolerate very light shade, but insufficient light will result in sparse, weak growth.

I thrive in warm, frost-free climates and am ideally suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 10-11.
I am highly sensitive to frost and prolonged cold. My ideal temperature range is between 21°C and 32°C.

Choose a sunny, open location with plenty of space for my crown to spread (I can grow over 10 meters tall!).

Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper.

Place me in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.

Backfill with native soil, amended with some compost if needed.

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

Apply a layer of organic mulch around my base, keeping it away from the trunk.

No pruning is needed due to my self-cleaning nature. Simply remove any dead fronds if they don't fall cleanly.

I am a heavy feeder, especially in sandy soils. Feed me with a continuous-release palm-specific fertilizer that contains micronutrients like magnesium, manganese, and iron.
Apply fertilizer every 3 months during the growing season (spring through fall) for best results.

Scientific Name: Wodyetia bifurcata

Common Names: Foxtail Palm

Plant Family: Arecaceae

Plant Type: Tropical Palm Tree

Good news! The ASPCA and other sources do not list the Foxtail Palm as toxic to cats or dogs. However, the hard seeds should not be ingested.

As a large palm, I am excellent at filtering carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air, producing oxygen, and adding humidity to the environment.

Provides a stunning, soft-textured tropical look with unique "foxtail" fronds.

Fast-growing compared to many other palm species.

Self-cleaning, meaning very low maintenance once established.

Excellent as a dramatic landscape focal point or avenue tree.

Non-invasive root system, making it safer near pavements and structures.

Nutrient Deficiencies: I am prone to potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) deficiencies, which show as yellowing or spotting on older fronds. A good palm fertilizer prevents this.

Crown Rot and Root Rot: Caused by poor drainage or overwatering.

Pests: Can occasionally be bothered by palm weevils, scale, or mealybugs.

Lethal Yellowing: A serious disease that affects some palms; choose certified disease-free plants.

With proper care and in the right climate, I am a long-lived palm. You can expect me to grace your landscape for 50 years or more, becoming a majestic and beloved feature.
