Hello! I'm the Gerbera Daisy, your bright and cheerful flowering friend! I'm known for my large, stunning, daisy-like flowers that come in a spectacular rainbow of vibrant colors. I bring happiness, positivity, and a bold splash of color to gardens, bouquets, and indoor spaces alike.
I'm a herbaceous perennial prized for my beautiful, large flower heads with a prominent central disc, held high on long, leafless stems above a rosette of lush, lobed leaves.
I'm a superstar in the cut flower world, lasting exceptionally long in vases, but I'm also a fantastic garden plant and popular potted gift plant.
My colors range from brilliant white and yellow to stunning shades of pink, orange, red, and salmon, guaranteed to lift your spirits.
I am native to South Africa, as well as tropical regions of Asia and South America.
Water me regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water at the base of the plant, avoiding the crown and leaves to prevent rot.
I dislike both drought and overwatering. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly before watering again.
I thrive in bright, indirect light or full morning sun with afternoon shade.
In hot climates, strong afternoon sun can scorch my petals. Indoors, a bright east or south-facing window is ideal.
I enjoy moderate temperatures between 18°C and 24°C.
I am not frost-tolerant and prefer protection from extreme heat. Good air circulation is important for my health.
Choose a pot with excellent drainage holes.
Use a well-draining, quality potting mix.
Plant me so the crown (where the stem meets the roots) is slightly above the soil line to prevent rot.
Water thoroughly after planting.
Maintain even moisture.
Place me in a spot with plenty of bright, filtered light.
Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
Feed me every two weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
A fertilizer higher in phosphorus (the middle number) can promote more prolific flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing.
Scientific Name: Gerbera jamesonii
Common Names: Gerbera Daisy, Transvaal Daisy, African Daisy
Plant Family: Asteraceae
Plant Type: Tender Perennial (often grown as an Annual)
Great news! I am non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. I am a safe and beautiful choice for pet-friendly homes and gardens.
I am a top-tier natural air purifier! I are particularly effective at removing toxins like formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene from the air, especially at night.
Produces incredibly vibrant, large, and long-lasting flowers.
Excellent air-purifying abilities.
Perfect as a cut flower, brightening bouquets for weeks.
Non-toxic and safe for pets.
Symbolizes happiness, innocence, and purity.
Crown or Root Rot: Caused by overwatering or poor drainage. This is my biggest threat.
Powdery Mildew: A white fungal growth on leaves, often due to poor air circulation or overhead watering.
Pests: Watch for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites.
Lack of Blooms: Usually due to insufficient light or too much nitrogen in the fertilizer.
In frost-free climates, I can live as a perennial for several years. In most regions, I am grown as a spectacular annual or enjoyed as a long-lasting indoor potted plant. As a cut flower, I can brighten a vase for up to two weeks!
