I’m a sacred fig tree with heart-shaped leaves and a long lifespan, revered for my shade, oxygen release, and cultural value.

I’m a sacred fig tree, revered across India for my heart-shaped leaves that shimmer in the wind. Known as the Peepal or Bodhi tree, I hold immense spiritual significance and am cherished for my shade, longevity, and cultural symbolism.

Native to the Indian subcontinent, I thrive in tropical and subtropical regions. I’m deeply rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, often planted near temples and sacred sites.

I’m hardy and drought-tolerant once established. Young plants benefit from regular watering, but mature trees need little care, surviving naturally with seasonal rains.

I flourish in full sun and open spaces. My broad canopy spreads wide, making me ideal for large landscapes.

I thrive in warm climates between 20°C to 35°C. I tolerate heat well but am sensitive to frost.

Plant me in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of space to expand. I grow into a massive shade tree, so avoid confined areas. My roots are strong and can damage nearby structures—choose open ground for planting.

I don’t demand much feeding. A little organic compost during early growth supports healthy establishment, but mature trees thrive naturally.

Genus: Ficus Species: Ficus religiosa Family: Moraceae Order: Rosales Type: Evergreen sacred fig tree

My leaves and bark are not recommended for pets. While not highly toxic, ingestion may cause mild irritation.

I’m known for releasing oxygen even at night, unlike most plants. My presence improves air quality and provides a cooling microclimate.

I offer shade, spiritual value, and medicinal uses. My bark, leaves, and roots are used in traditional remedies, while my cultural significance makes me a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment.

Few natural problems affect me, though young plants may suffer from poor soil or overwatering. My roots can be invasive if planted too close to buildings.

I can live for centuries, often exceeding 100–200 years, standing as a timeless guardian in temples, villages, and sacred groves.
