All Details

I am Black Grapes, the decadent jewels of the vine. My vigorous, climbing canes are adorned with broad, lobed leaves and bear heavy clusters of deep purple to ebony berries. Each plump grape is a burst of concentrated sweetness, often with hints of berry and spice, encased in a thin, tannic skin—a classic symbol of abundance and winemaking.

I am a perennial, deciduous climbing vine (or liana) grown for its succulent fruit. "Black Grapes" encompasses many dark-skinned cultivars of Vitis vinifera and hybrids, prized for fresh eating (table grapes), drying into raisins, and especially for red wine production.

Native to the Mediterranean region, Central Europe, and Southwest Asia. Cultivated for thousands of years and now grown in temperate and subtropical climates worldwide.

Require deep, infrequent watering to encourage deep roots. Consistent moisture is critical during fruit set and berry swelling. Drought stress before harvest can intensify flavor but reduce yield. Overwatering dilutes flavor and promotes disease.

Demand full sun (7-8+ hours daily) for optimal sugar development (brix), color accumulation in the skins, and overall vine health.

Thrive in warm, dry summers with cool nights (15-30°C range). Require a winter chilling period (dormancy) for fruitfulness. Spring frosts can damage buds.

Plant in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Requires a strong trellis, pergola, or wire system for support. Pruning during dormancy is essential for controlling vigor and ensuring fruit production.

Require balanced nutrition. A fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus than nitrogen is best for fruiting. Soil testing is recommended to tailor amendments. Over-fertilizing leads to excessive leafy growth.

Botanical name: Primarily Vitis vinifera cultivars (e.g., 'Cabernet Sauvignon', 'Syrah', 'Black Muscat'); also hybrid varieties; Common names: Black Grapes, Purple Grapes, Red Grapes (for wine); Family: Vitaceae.

⚠️ TOXIC to dogs and cats. Grapes and raisins can cause acute kidney failure in dogs, with the toxic mechanism unknown. Assume all grapes are highly dangerous for pets.

Low. Grown primarily for fruit production in outdoor vineyards. As a vigorous leafy vine, it can provide shade cover but is not a significant indoor air purifier.

Fruit is delicious fresh, dried, or pressed into juice/wine; vines create beautiful, productive shade over arbors; the anthocyanins (pigments) in the skin are potent antioxidants.

Susceptible to many fungal diseases (powdery mildew, downy mildew, black rot, botrytis). Pests include grape berry moth, phylloxera, and birds. Improper pruning leads to poor yields.

Long-lived perennial vine. With proper care, a vine can remain productive for 50-100 years. Can grow over 15 meters long but is meticulously managed to much shorter lengths in cultivation.
