All Details

I am the Mango Langda, the "lame one" with a regal heart. My robust tree produces medium-sized, obliquely oval fruits with a characteristic greenish-yellow skin, often with a prominent beak. My flesh is golden, exceptionally smooth, and utterly fiberless, offering a perfect, intense balance of sweetness and refreshing tartness with a captivating, spicy aroma.

I am a famous, late-season mango (Mangifera indica 'Langra') from North India, believed to have originated from a seedling planted by a lame farmer in Varanasi. I am prized for my unique flavor, vibrant color, and long shelf life, making me a top choice for the market and home gardens.

Native to the Gangetic plains of North India, with its epicenter in and around Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Widely cultivated across North Indian states like Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana.

Requires regular irrigation, especially during the critical fruit development stage in the hot, dry North Indian summers. Drought stress can lead to poor fruit size and quality.

Demands full sun (8+ hours of direct sunlight) in a hot climate to develop its full sugar content and signature aromatic compounds.

Thrives in the hot, dry summer heat of North India (25-40°C). Requires a distinct period of high temperatures for optimal ripening and flavor development.

Plant in deep, alluvial, well-drained soil. Due to its vigorous growth and large canopy, ample spacing (8-10m) is required. Often grown as a standalone tree in fields or large courtyards.

Responds well to organic manures like farmyard compost. A balanced NPK fertilizer with higher potassium applied post-harvest and pre-flowering supports yield and fruit quality.

Botanical name: Mangifera indica 'Langra'; Common names: Langda, Langra, Banarasi Langra; Family: Anacardiaceae.

The ripe fruit flesh is safe in moderation. However, the peel, sap, and leaves contain urushiol and can cause irritation. The seed is a choking hazard.

High. As a large, leafy deciduous tree, it provides excellent shade and contributes significantly to oxygen production and cooling in the summer.

Celebrated for its distinctive, spicy-sweet flavor and addictive aroma; retains its greenish skin even when ripe, making it easily identifiable; has excellent keeping quality and travels well; a beloved commercial and domestic variety.

Susceptible to mango malformation disease and anthracnose. Attacked by fruit flies and hoppers. Being a monoembryonic variety, it does not come true from seed and must be propagated by grafting.

Long-lived perennial tree. Can remain productive for 50+ years. Grows into a large, tall tree, reaching 8-10 meters in height with a broad, dense canopy.
