I am the Red Mulberry, a cascade of sweet, dark jewels. My broad, heart-shaped leaves provide a lush canopy, under which dangle clusters of deep red to nearly black berries that are intensely sweet, juicy, and beloved by birds, wildlife, and gardeners alike.
I am a deciduous fruit tree, native to North America, prized for its delicious, dark red to black berries that are longer and sweeter than the common white mulberry, excellent for fresh eating, jams, and attracting wildlife.
Native to eastern and central North America. Also cultivated in gardens for its fruit and ornamental value.
Water regularly, especially during the first few years and in dry periods. Once established, moderately drought-tolerant.
Prefers full sun for the best fruit production but can tolerate partial shade.
Hardy and adaptable, thrives in a wide range (15-30°C). Cold-hardy and can withstand winter frost.
Plant in deep, well-drained, fertile soil. Space trees 5-8 meters apart due to spreading canopy.
Feed in early spring with a balanced fertilizer or compost. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers which promote leaf growth over fruiting.
Botanical name: Morus rubra; Common names: American Mulberry; Family: Moraceae.
The ripe berries are non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs in moderation. Unripe fruit and other plant parts may cause mild stomach upset.
Moderate; as a medium to large tree, it contributes to air quality, provides shade, and supports local ecology.
Produces abundant, sweet berries for fresh eating and preserves; excellent wildlife tree for birds and pollinators; fast-growing and provides good shade.
Berries can stain surfaces; susceptible to powdery mildew, bacterial blight, and scale insects; birds may eat the entire crop.
Moderately long-lived; can live 50-75 years or more, growing 10-15 meters tall with a broad, spreading crown.
