I am Mango Hapus, the undisputed sovereign of the mango world. My elegant, spreading tree bears the most coveted fruit: a golden saffron-hued oval with a flawless, thin skin. My flesh is a sublime, fiberless, melting custard of unparalleled richness, sweetness, and complex aromatic notes of peach, apricot, and honey—a true luxury of nature.
I am the world-famous 'Alphonso' mango (Mangifera indica 'Alphonso'), a premium Indian cultivar named after Afonso de Albuquerque. I am prized globally for my exceptional flavor, aroma, texture, and long shelf life, making me the gold standard for exports and connoisseurs.
Indigenous to the Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa, India. Specifically thrives in the lateritic soil and coastal climate of Ratnagiri, Devgad, and Sindhudurg districts.
Requires careful water management. Needs deep watering during flowering and fruit development but is sensitive to waterlogging. A dry period before flowering is crucial for good fruit set.
Demands full, intense sun (8+ hours) and a long, hot growing season to develop its signature high brix (sugar content) and rich flavor profile.
Thrives in a warm, coastal tropical climate (24-32°C) with high humidity. Sensitive to untimely rains during flowering and cold winds.
Plant in deep, well-drained, lateritic or red loamy soil. Requires ample spacing (10m x 10m) for its large canopy. Grafted plants are essential for true-to-type fruit.
Requires balanced nutrition with an emphasis on potassium and micronutrients. Excessive nitrogen promotes vegetative growth at the expense of flowering. Organic practices are highly valued in its native region.
Botanical name: Mangifera indica 'Alphonso'; Common names: Hapus, Aapoos, Alphonso Mango; Family: Anacardiaceae.
The ripe fruit flesh is safe in small amounts. However, the peel, sap, and leaves contain urushiol and can cause skin irritation and stomach upset. The large seed is a choking hazard.
High. As a large, evergreen tree, it is excellent for oxygen production and providing dense shade, though it is cultivated primarily for its supreme fruit.
Unmatched flavor and aroma make it the most sought-after mango variety for fresh eating and premium products like pulp and ice cream; high economic value and major export commodity; the tree is a stately landscape specimen.
Highly susceptible to mango hoppers and anthracnose fungus, especially during flowering. Requires meticulous pest/disease management. Biennial bearing tendency (heavy crop one year, light the next).
Long-lived perennial tree. Grafted trees begin fruiting in 5-6 years and can remain productive for 40-60 years or more. Grows into a large tree, 6-8 meters tall with a broad, rounded canopy.
