Hey there, friend! I'm the Conocarpus, your resilient and versatile companion that brings rugged beauty and practical benefits to your landscape. With my dense, silver-green foliage and adaptable nature, I'm here to create reliable structure and natural screening in challenging conditions!
I'm a tough evergreen tree or large shrub known for my attractive, lance-shaped leaves that have a silvery-gray appearance, and my interesting, cone-like fruit clusters that give me my name.
Landscape designers and practical gardeners adore me for my exceptional salt tolerance, drought resistance, and ability to thrive in difficult growing conditions where other plants might struggle.
I'm perfect for coastal gardens, windbreaks, hedges, and urban landscapes — anywhere you need a reliable, low-maintenance plant that can handle tough conditions!
I originally come from coastal regions of tropical Americas, Florida, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa, where I've adapted to thrive in salty, windy, and dry environments.
Water me regularly during my first year to establish a deep root system.
Once established, I'm extremely drought-tolerant and need minimal watering.
I actually prefer dry conditions and can suffer from overwatering!
I love full sun for 6-8 hours daily for the best growth and form!
The more sun I get, the denser and more compact my growth will be.
I can tolerate some shade but will grow best in full sun.
I'm comfortable in warm temperatures between 15°C and 35°C.
I'm quite heat-tolerant and can handle coastal winds and salt spray with ease.
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil
Dig a hole twice as wide as my root ball
Plant me at the same depth I was in my container
Space multiple plants 6-10 feet apart for hedging
Water thoroughly after planting, then gradually reduce frequency
I'm excellent for stabilizing soil in erosion-prone areas
Prune regularly if you want me as a formal hedge or screen
I'm a very light feeder and rarely need fertilizer.
If needed, use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during establishment.
I actually thrive in poor soils and don't like rich conditions!
Scientific Name: Conocarpus erectus
Common Names: Buttonwood, Silver Buttonwood, Button Mangrove
Plant Family: Combretaceae
Plant Type: Outdoor Tree/Shrub
I'm generally considered non-toxic, making me a safe choice for landscapes with pets!
As a substantial evergreen, I'm excellent at absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, while my dense foliage helps filter dust and pollutants from the air!
Exceptional salt and drought tolerance
Excellent for windbreaks and privacy screens
Low maintenance and pest-resistant
Can be pruned into hedges or grown as small trees
Chlorosis in alkaline soils (shows as yellowing leaves)
Root rot in poorly drained soils
Scale insects in stressed conditions
Limited cold tolerance in freezing temperatures
I'm a long-lived plant that can grace your landscape for decades — typically 30-50 years or more, growing more established and resilient with each passing year, especially in coastal and arid environments!
