I’m a vigorous passion vine producing large aromatic fruits with sweet-tart pulp and beautiful exotic flowers.
I am the Lakshman Fal, or Soursop, a small, upright, evergreen tree prized for my highly ornamental, large, spiky green fruit. I possess a dense, low-branching canopy and am the most famous member of the Annona family for my significant therapeutic properties.
My leaves are large, glossy, dark green, and aromatic when crushed. My fruit is massive, typically heart-shaped or oval, covered in soft, fleshy spines, and has white, fibrous, acidic pulp with a complex flavor that is a blend of pineapple, strawberry, and citrus.
I am primarily valued for my unique flavor, which is excellent in drinks and desserts, and my leaves and bark, which are widely used in traditional medicine. Like my cousins, I am highly susceptible to cold and require warm, sheltered conditions.
I am native to the tropical Americas and the Caribbean, where I thrive in warm, humid, low-elevation areas.
I am a thirsty tropical tree and require consistent moisture, especially when fruiting.
Routine: Water me frequently and heavily, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist at all times. I am highly sensitive to drought, which causes severe leaf and fruit drop.
Tolerance: I demand excellent drainage. While I love water, standing water will quickly lead to fatal root rot.
I require high light but prefer slightly filtered conditions, especially when young.
Preference: I thrive in full sun exposure (at least 6 hours of direct light daily) once mature.
Tolerance: I can tolerate light shade when young, which is common in my natural understory habitat. Insufficient light severely reduces fruit production.
I am a truly tropical tree that demands consistent, high warmth and humidity to survive.
Growing: I thrive in high, stable temperatures between 25°C and 35°C (77°F and 95°F) during the growing season.
Cold Tolerance: I am extremely sensitive to cold. Temperatures must never drop below 10°C (50°F), and freezing temperatures will severely damage or kill the entire tree, as I have no natural defense against frost.
I am best suited for warm, sheltered gardens or greenhouses.
Soil: Use a deep, rich, organic, and well-draining soil. I do not tolerate heavy clay or poor drainage.
Placement: Choose a site protected from strong winds, which can easily damage my branches and large leaves. I am excellent for containers in cold climates.
I benefit from consistent and robust feeding to support my rapid, continuous growth and perennial fruiting.
Routine: Feed me frequently during the growing season (3-4 times per year). Use a complete, balanced granular fertilizer (e.g., 8-4-8 or 10-10-10 NPK) that is rich in nitrogen to support my continuous growth and heavy fruiting.
Caution: Always spread fertilizer evenly under the canopy, avoiding direct contact with the trunk. Over-fertilizing can cause salt burn and damage my roots, and stop feeding entirely during the cool, dormant season.
Scientific Name: Annona muricata
Common Names: Soursop, Lakshman Fal, Graviola, Guanábana, Brazilian Paw Paw
Plant Family: Annonaceae (Custard-apple family)
Plant Type: Small to Medium, Evergreen Tropical Fruit Tree
The Soursop or Lakshman Fal tree (Annona muricata) is considered TOXIC to pets due to the presence of annonacin in the seeds, leaves, bark, and roots; while the fruit pulp is safe for consumption, the hard, black seeds are highly poisonous if chewed or crushed, and consumption of the seeds or leaves can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset and potential neurological symptoms in animals.
As an evergreen tropical tree with large, dense foliage, I contribute to local air quality by consistently sequestering Carbon Dioxide and providing substantial, cooling shade, which benefits the microclimate where I am planted.
Unique Fruit Flavor: My fruit provides a distinct, complex flavor ideal for drinks, smoothies, and ice cream.
Medicinal Value: My leaves and bark are extensively used in herbal traditions for their potential therapeutic and calming properties.
Fast Growth: I establish quickly and can bear fruit within a few years of planting.
Cold Damage: My extreme sensitivity to cold is my biggest weakness.
Wind Damage: My branches are soft and easily broken by strong winds.
Pests: Highly susceptible to mealybugs, scale, and specific fruit borers.
Pollination: Can sometimes require hand-pollination for reliable fruit set.
I am a moderately long-lived fruit tree. With optimal, protected care, I can remain productive for 30 to 50 years.
