Hello, admirer of vibrant foliage! I am the Lemon Croton, your dazzling and sun-kissed companion, celebrated for my brilliantly colored leaves that shine in vibrant shades of green, yellow, and lime. I bring a burst of permanent sunshine to any space, with a compact, bushy habit that's full of life and color. I'm here to brighten your home and garden with my cheerful, painterly leaves!
I am a dense, evergreen tropical shrub with glossy, leathery leaves that are my main attraction.
My most spectacular feature is my foliage—a vibrant mix of lime green, lemon yellow, and deep green, often with bold veining and a slightly ruffled or twisted shape.
My leaves are smaller and more tightly clustered than some of my larger croton cousins, giving me a very full, bushy appearance.
I am a slow to moderate grower, valued for my consistent and bright coloration.
I am a cultivated variety, with my species ancestors originating from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.
I prefer consistently moist (but not soggy) soil during my active growing season (spring and summer).
Water me when the top inch of soil feels dry. I am sensitive to both overwatering (causes root rot) and underwatering (causes leaf drop).
I thrive with high humidity. Regular misting or a pebble tray will keep my leaves vibrant and prevent browning.
Reduce watering slightly in winter when my growth slows.
I am a bright, indirect light lover!
I need several hours of bright, filtered sunlight daily to maintain my intense lemon-yellow leaf coloration.
Too little light will cause my colors to fade to a plain green. Too much direct sun can scorch my beautiful leaves.
I thrive in warm, stable temperatures between 18°C and 29°C.
I am very sensitive to cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can cause leaf drop.
Keep me away from air conditioning vents and drafty windows, especially in winter.
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
Choose a container with drainage holes and repot me every 1-2 years in spring.
Wear gloves when handling me—my sap can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested.
I make a spectacular potted plant for bright patios, sunrooms, and living rooms.
Feed me with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer.
Use a half-strength solution to avoid burning my roots.
No fertilizer is needed during fall and winter when my growth slows down.
Scientific Name: Codiaeum variegatum 'Lemon'
Common Names: Lemon Croton, Sunny Star Croton
Plant Family: Euphorbiaceae
Plant Type: Tropical evergreen shrub, typically grown as a houseplant
HIGHLY TOXIC to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. My sap contains compounds that can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Keep me well out of reach of pets and children.
While I'm grown mainly for my spectacular appearance, I do contribute to cleaner indoor air by absorbing certain airborne toxins and releasing oxygen.
Unmatched foliage color—I provide year-round visual interest and a bright, cheerful energy.
Dramatic statement plant that becomes an instant focal point.
Compact and bushy growth habit, perfect for containers.
My bold appearance elevates any interior or patio design scheme.
Leaf drop - Often caused by sudden temperature changes, drafts, or improper watering.
Spider mites - These pests love dry conditions; increase humidity to deter them.
Mealybugs - Can hide in leaf axils and undersides.
Fading color - Not enough bright, indirect light.
Brown leaf tips - Usually due to low humidity or underwatering.
Root rot - From overwatering or poorly draining soil.
With proper care, I can be a long-lived and stunning companion for 5-10 years or more indoors. I may become leggy over time, but regular pruning will help maintain my bushy appearance. While I can be dramatic in my responses to environmental changes, my breathtaking beauty makes me a rewarding plant for those who appreciate vibrant color and are willing to meet my needs!
