Silver Oak is best planted in open sunny areas with well-drained soil. It is widely used in coffee and tea plantations as a shade tree, and in urban landscapes for avenues and parks. Its timber is highly prized, so it serves both economic and ornamental purposes.
I am a fast-growing evergreen tree known for my tall, straight trunk and fern-like leaves. My wood is highly valued for furniture, while my canopy provides shade and ornamental beauty in gardens and avenues.
Native to eastern Australia, I have been widely introduced to India and other tropical regions. Farmers and landscapers plant me both for timber and as a shade tree in coffee and tea plantations.
I require moderate watering during my early years to establish strong roots. Once mature, I am drought-tolerant and thrive with occasional deep watering, especially in dry seasons.
I flourish in full sun where my leaves can spread wide and photosynthesize efficiently. Partial shade is tolerated, but maximum growth and flowering occur under direct sunlight.
I grow best in warm climates ranging from 20–35°C. I am sensitive to frost, so I thrive in tropical and subtropical regions where winters are mild.
Plant me in well-drained soil with ample space, as I can reach heights of 20–30 meters. I am often used as a boundary tree, avenue plantation, or shade provider in agroforestry systems.
I respond well to organic compost and balanced NPK fertilizer during my growing years. Fertilization helps me develop strong timber quality and lush foliage.
Botanical name: Grevillea robusta. Family: Proteaceae. I am related to other Grevillea species but stand out as the largest and most commercially important.
My leaves and flowers are generally safe, but my seeds and pods contain compounds that may irritate if ingested. Pets should not chew on my woody parts.
I contribute significantly to air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering dust. My large canopy also reduces heat and provides microclimate cooling.
I provide valuable timber for furniture, flooring, and cabinetry. In plantations, I serve as a shade tree, windbreak, and soil stabilizer, while also enhancing biodiversity.
I am susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and leaf spot diseases in humid conditions. Pests such as borers and caterpillars may occasionally attack my foliage.
I can live for 40–60 years, growing rapidly in my first decade. My timber is harvestable after 15–20 years, making me both an ornamental and economic asset.
