All Details

Soap Aloe (Aloe maculata) is a hardy succulent known for its spotted leaves, orange-red flowers, and natural soap-like gel. Native to southern Africa, it thrives in dry, sunny conditions and is often used in xeriscaping, medicinal gardens, and erosion control. Unlike Aloe vera, Soap Aloe is more ornamental and tolerant of poor soils and drought.

I am a tough, drought-resistant succulent with spotted, fleshy leaves and vibrant orange-red flowers. My leaf gel produces a natural lather, giving me the name “Soap Aloe,” though I am not used as commonly as Aloe vera in skincare.

Native to southern Africa, I am well adapted to arid and semi-arid climates. I have been introduced to India and other tropical regions for ornamental use, erosion control, and low-maintenance landscaping.

I require minimal watering and prefer dry conditions. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so I thrive best when the soil is allowed to dry completely between waterings.

I grow best in full sun, which enhances my leaf coloration and flower production. I can tolerate partial shade but may become leggy or lose vibrancy in low light.

I flourish in warm climates between 20–35°C. I am highly heat-tolerant and can survive brief cold spells, but frost may damage my leaves.

Plant me in sandy, well-drained soil with good airflow. I spread through offsets and can be used as ground cover or in rock gardens, with spacing of 30–50 cm between plants.

I require little feeding; a light application of cactus fertilizer once or twice a year is sufficient. Excess nutrients may reduce my drought tolerance.

Botanical name: Aloe maculata. Family: Asphodelaceae. I am often confused with Aloe vera, but my spotted leaves and flower color set me apart.

My sap may cause mild irritation if ingested by pets. It is best to keep me out of reach of curious animals.

Moderate; I help reduce indoor pollutants when grown in pots, though my primary value is ornamental and medicinal.

I offer ornamental beauty, erosion control, and a natural soap-like gel. My flowers attract pollinators, and my low water needs make me ideal for sustainable gardens.

I am generally pest-resistant but may suffer from mealybugs or fungal rot in humid conditions. Poor drainage is the most common cause of decline.

I can live for 10–20 years, producing offsets regularly. My flowers bloom seasonally, and I remain evergreen in warm climates.
