All Details

I am Mammillaria parkinsonii, the owl-eye cactus. My round body is covered in white woolly spines, giving me a soft, feathery look. I bloom with delicate pink flowers, making me a prized ornamental for cactus lovers.

I am a small, globular cactus with tubercled segments and woolly white spines. My crown produces rings of pinkish-red flowers, earning me the nickname “Owl-Eye Cactus.”

I am endemic to Querétaro and Hidalgo in central Mexico, growing in semi-desert habitats with calcareous soils. My natural population is endangered due to illegal collection and habitat loss.

I require minimal watering, only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering can cause root rot, so I thrive best in arid conditions with good drainage.

I flourish in bright sunlight, which enhances my compact growth and flowering. Indoors, I need a sunny windowsill or grow light to maintain my form.

I thrive in warm climates between 20–30°C. I am sensitive to frost and must be protected in colder regions, especially during winter.

Plant me in sandy, well-drained cactus soil with good airflow. I grow slowly and remain compact, making me ideal for pots and rock gardens.

I need very little feeding; a diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season is sufficient. Excess nutrients can damage my roots.

Botanical name: Mammillaria parkinsonii Ehrenberg. Family: Cactaceae. I was first described in 1840 and remain a rare species in cultivation.

Like most cacti, I am non-toxic but my spines can cause injury if touched or chewed by pets.

Low; my primary value is ornamental.

I provide ornamental beauty, unique woolly texture, and seasonal flowers. I am highly prized by collectors and cactus enthusiasts.

I am prone to root rot if overwatered and may suffer from mealybugs or spider mites in humid conditions.

I can live for decades with proper care, slowly forming clusters over time. My flowers appear seasonally, adding charm to my compact form.
