All Details

I am a highly fragrant, climbing shrub with delicate white star-shaped flowers that bloom at night, releasing an intoxicating perfume that fills the evening air. Known as "Mogra" or "Arabian Jasmine" in India, I'm deeply woven into cultural traditions, from temple offerings to wedding ceremonies. My pure white blossoms contrast beautifully against glossy green leaves, creating an elegant display.

I'm a vigorous evergreen climber that can reach 3-6 meters in height with support. My small, waxy, white flowers typically have 5-9 petals and bloom in clusters, opening at dusk and lasting through the night. During the day, my flowers often close or drop, but new buds promise another fragrant evening. I'm not just beautiful - I'm the source of jasmine essential oil, one of the world's most precious floral extracts.

Native to tropical Asia, particularly India, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. I've been cultivated for over 2,000 years in the Indian subcontinent, where I'm deeply embedded in cultural and religious practices. Arab traders introduced me to the Middle East and North Africa, hence my common name "Arabian Jasmine." Today, I'm grown throughout tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

I prefer consistently moist soil, especially during my growing and flowering seasons. Water me deeply 2-3 times per week in summer, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter. I dislike waterlogged conditions but will suffer if allowed to dry out completely during active growth periods.

I thrive in full sun to partial shade. At least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily ensures abundant flowering. In extremely hot climates, I appreciate afternoon shade. Too little light results in sparse blooms and leggy growth. Morning sun with afternoon protection is ideal in tropical regions.

I flourish in warm temperatures between 20–35°C. I'm sensitive to frost and temperatures below 10°C can damage me. I'm best suited for USDA zones 9-11 outdoors but can be grown in containers and brought indoors in colder climates during winter.

Plant me in rich, well-draining soil with organic matter. Provide strong support like trellises, fences, or pergolas as I'm a climber. Space plants 1.5-2 meters apart. Ideal for garden borders, containers, or as a fragrant screen. Spring planting allows me to establish before flowering season.

I respond well to regular feeding during the growing season. Apply balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) every 4-6 weeks from spring through fall. Organic options like compost tea or well-rotted manure work wonderfully. Phosphorus-rich fertilizer promotes more blooms. Reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Botanical name: Jasminum sambac. Family: Oleaceae (olive family). My flowers contain benzyl acetate, linalool, and benzyl benzoate, which create my distinctive fragrance. I'm the national flower of the Philippines ("Sampaguita") and one of the three national flowers of Indonesia ("Melati").

Generally non-toxic to pets, though ingestion of large quantities may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. I'm considered pet-safe compared to many ornamental plants. However, it's always best to prevent pets from chewing on any plants excessively.

Moderate - While not a top air purifier, my presence improves indoor air quality through oxygen production. The fragrance itself has calming properties that can improve mood and reduce stress, contributing to a healthier indoor environment psychologically if not physically purifying.

I provide intensely fragrant flowers for garlands, religious ceremonies, and perfumery, yield essential oil used in aromatherapy and skincare, attract pollinators like moths and bees at night, and create beautiful living screens with both visual and olfactory appeal.

Whiteflies, spider mites, and mealybugs can be issues, especially indoors. Fungal diseases like powdery mildew in humid conditions. Root rot from overwatering. Yellowing leaves may indicate nutrient deficiency or poor drainage. Regular inspection and proper air circulation prevent most problems.

With proper care, I can live 15-20 years or more. I'm a perennial that grows more woody with age but continues flowering annually. Regular pruning after flowering maintains shape and encourages new growth. I can be propagated easily from cuttings to create new plants.
