I am a stunning, large-flowered evergreen shrub known for my bold, vibrant, and often fragrant blossoms that come in shades of red, orange, pink, or white. My name, meaning “intoxicated with joy” in several Indian languages, perfectly captures the celebratory and eye-catching beauty I bring to gardens. With glossy leaves and showy blooms, I am a popular ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical landscapes.

Native to tropical regions of South America, especially Brazil and Peru, I have been widely introduced and naturalized in many warm parts of the world, including India, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. I thrive in humid, tropical climates and am often seen in parks, gardens, and along roadsides.

I prefer moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained. During hot and dry periods, water me deeply once or twice a week. Reduce watering in cooler or rainy months to prevent root rot.

I thrive in full sun to partial shade. I require at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to bloom profusely. Too much shade will result in fewer flowers and leggy growth.

I flourish in warm climates, ideally between 20°C to 35°C. I am sensitive to frost and prolonged cold, and temperatures below 10°C can damage my foliage and inhibit blooming.

Plant me in rich, well-draining soil amended with compost or organic matter. Space shrubs 1–2 meters apart to allow for mature spread. I can also be grown in large containers with good drainage for patios or balconies.

Feed me every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a bloom-booster formula. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can promote leaves at the expense of flowers.

Botanical name: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (commonly called Tropical Hibiscus or China Rose). Family: Malvaceae. The name "Madanmast" is often used in India for hibiscus varieties with large, bright, and captivating flowers.

Generally non-toxic to pets, though ingestion of large quantities may cause mild stomach upset. However, some hibiscus species (especially Hibiscus syriacus) can be toxic to dogs and cats, so it’s best to discourage pets from chewing on me.

Moderate. I contribute to outdoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. While not a top indoor air purifier, I can help improve the microclimate when grown in gardens or outdoor spaces.

I am prized for my ornamental beauty and long flowering season. I attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. In some cultures, my flowers are used in offerings, hair adornments, and traditional remedies.

Susceptible to aphids, whiteflies, and mealybugs. Fungal issues like leaf spot or powdery mildew may occur in humid conditions with poor air circulation. Yellowing leaves often indicate overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or poor drainage.

I am a perennial shrub that can live for 10–15 years or more with proper care. I bloom almost year-round in tropical climates, with peak flowering during warm and humid months.
