I am a majestic and ornamental tropical shrub known for my large, glossy, deep burgundy to almost black leaves, often with striking crimson veins and undersides. I produce tall, elegant flower spikes adorned with delicate pink or lavender blossoms, creating a dramatic contrast against my dark foliage. I am prized in landscaping for my bold color, architectural form, and ability to add a regal, tropical flair to gardens and indoor spaces.

Native to New Guinea and surrounding Pacific Islands, I am named in honor of Queen Emma of Hawaii, who was an avid plant collector. I have been widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, including Hawaii, Florida, and Southeast Asia, where I thrive in humid coastal climates.

I prefer consistently moist but well-drained soil. Water me regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings. I enjoy high humidity and benefit from occasional misting in dry indoor air.

I thrive in bright, indirect light or partial shade. I can tolerate some morning sun, but strong afternoon sunlight may scorch my richly colored leaves. Too little light can cause my foliage to lose its deep hue and become greener.

I flourish in warm, humid environments with temperatures between 20°C to 30°C. I am sensitive to cold and frost, and temperatures below 15°C can cause leaf damage. In cooler climates, I can be grown indoors or in greenhouse conditions.

Plant me in rich, well-draining soil amended with organic compost. Space plants 1–1.5 meters apart to accommodate my broad, spreading growth. I can be grown in large containers or directly in the ground in frost-free areas.

Feed me monthly during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. For more intense leaf color, use a fertilizer higher in nitrogen, but reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.

Botanical name: Pseuderanthemum atropurpureum or Graptophyllum pictum (commonly called Caricature Plant or Purple Pseuderanthemum). Family: Acanthaceae. “Queen Emma” is a popular cultivar name used for dark-leaved varieties of these species.

Generally non-toxic to pets, though ingestion of large quantities may cause mild stomach upset. It is best to keep me out of reach of curious cats and dogs to avoid any potential issues.

Moderate. My large leaves help absorb airborne pollutants and release oxygen, improving indoor air quality. I also contribute to humidity through transpiration.

I add striking color and tropical elegance to gardens, patios, and indoor spaces. I am often used as a focal point in landscaping, in mixed borders, or as a dramatic potted specimen. My flowers attract pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds.

Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects, especially in dry indoor conditions. Leaf drop or fading color may result from insufficient light, overwatering, or low humidity. Fungal leaf spots can occur in overly damp conditions.

I am a perennial shrub that can live for 5–10 years or more with proper care. Regular pruning helps maintain my shape and encourages denser, more vibrant foliage.
