Hey there, eco-gardener! I'm Karanj, your resilient and multi-talented companion who brings ecological benefits and traditional wisdom to your landscape! With my attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and valuable seeds, I'm here to create a sustainable ecosystem while honoring ancient healing traditions. I'm the tree that works hard for both nature and people!

I'm a versatile evergreen tree known for my dense, glossy green leaves, clusters of pinkish-white fragrant flowers, and distinctive brown seeds that have been valued for centuries in traditional practices!
Eco-gardeners and sustainability enthusiasts adore me for my nitrogen-fixing abilities, soil improvement qualities, and the way I support biodiversity while providing multiple practical benefits.
I'm perfect for agroforestry, erosion control, avenue planting, and organic farms — anywhere you want to create a sustainable, productive landscape!

I originally come from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, particularly India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, where I've been an important part of traditional ecosystems for centuries.

I'm extremely drought-tolerant once established and need minimal watering!
During the first year, water me regularly to help my roots settle in.
Once mature, I can survive on natural rainfall and only need watering during extended dry spells.

I thrive in full sun — at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth!
The more sun I receive, the better I'll grow and the more seeds I'll produce.
I'm quite adaptable and can handle various light conditions, but full sun is my favorite!

I prefer warm temperatures between 20°C and 38°C.
I'm quite heat-tolerant and can handle high temperatures, though I'm sensitive to severe frost.

Choose a location with well-draining soil — I'm not picky about soil quality!

I can grow in poor, saline, and alkaline soils where other trees struggle

Plant me at the same depth I was in my nursery container

Water thoroughly after planting, then I'm quite self-sufficient

Place me where I'll receive plenty of direct sunlight

I make an excellent windbreak and soil stabilizer!

I can be propagated from seeds or root suckers

I'm a nitrogen-fixer — I actually improve soil fertility myself!
I rarely need fertilizer and can make my own nutrients through root nodules.
If needed, a little compost during establishment helps me get started.

Scientific Name: Millettia pinnata (formerly Pongamia pinnata)

Common Names: Karanj, Pongam, Indian Beech, Poonga Oil Tree

Plant Family: Fabaceae

Plant Type: Leguminous Tree

My seeds are toxic if ingested raw, but the processed oil is safe. It's best to keep my fallen seeds away from curious pets and children!

I'm a superstar at carbon sequestration and oxygen production, while my nitrogen-fixing abilities actually improve soil health for surrounding plants!

Natural nitrogen-fixer improves soil fertility

Biofuel production from my oil-rich seeds

Excellent for erosion control with my extensive root system

Traditional medicinal uses in Ayurveda

Drought and salt-tolerant — grows in challenging conditions

Leaf miners (usually not serious enough to treat)

Scale insects (in stressed conditions)

Root rot (only in waterlogged conditions)

Sooty mold (from aphid honeydew)

Seed litter (my main "mess" during fruiting season)

I am a long-lived tree that can thrive for 80-100 years or more! I grow relatively fast and begin producing seeds within 4-7 years. With my incredible adaptability and multiple ecological benefits, I'll be your sustainable green companion for generations, continuously improving your landscape while providing valuable resources year after year!
