I am a versatile and resilient genus of plants, ranging from majestic trees to elegant houseplants, known for my glossy green leaves, distinctive growth forms, and often unique aerial roots. I am celebrated worldwide for my adaptability, air-purifying abilities, and cultural significance—symbolizing peace, prosperity, and endurance in many traditions.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas, I have spread across the globe through cultivation. Many species, like the Sacred Fig (Ficus religiosa) and the Banyan (Ficus benghalensis), hold deep spiritual importance in Buddhism, Hinduism, and other cultures.

I prefer consistent moisture but dislike soggy soil. Water me when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Overwatering causes root rot and leaf drop, while underwatering leads to wilting and yellowing. Good drainage is essential.

I thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light indoors. Direct harsh sun can scorch my leaves, while too little light may stunt growth and reduce leaf vibrancy. Some species adapt well to shade.

I flourish in warm temperatures between 18°C to 30°C. I am sensitive to frost and cold drafts. Most species cannot tolerate temperatures below 10°C for extended periods.

Plant me in well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix. In gardens, choose a sunny to partially shaded location with ample space for root and canopy growth. Many smaller varieties do well in containers with drainage holes.

Feed me with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter. Over-fertilizing can cause leaf burn or weak growth.

Botanical name: Ficus spp. (common species include Ficus benjamina, Ficus elastica, Ficus lyrata, Ficus microcarpa, and Ficus religiosa). Family: Moraceae. The genus includes trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, and popular indoor plants.

Most Ficus species are toxic to pets. The milky sap contains ficin and psoralen, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, or skin reactions in cats and dogs. Keep me out of their reach.

Excellent. Many ficus species are top air-purifying plants, known to filter formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, and other common indoor pollutants, as recognized by NASA studies.

I improve indoor air quality, add aesthetic and architectural value, and are low-maintenance once acclimated. Outdoor species provide shade, habitat for wildlife, and soil stability. I’m also used in bonsai and ornamental gardening.

Leaf drop due to environmental changes (light, temperature, watering), pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale, and fungal issues in overly damp conditions. Yellow leaves often signal overwatering.

I am long-lived. Indoor potted ficus can thrive for 10–20 years or more with proper care. Outdoor trees, like the banyan, can live for hundreds of years, growing into vast ecological landmarks.
