I am a fast-growing, graceful flowering vine known for my delicate, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in lovely shades of purple, blue, white, or yellow, often with a contrasting throat. My lush green foliage provides a dense cover, making me a popular choice for trellises, fences, pergolas, and garden arches, where I add a cascade of color and natural beauty.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, especially South Africa, I have been widely cultivated in warm climates around the world. I am a favorite in Indian gardens, where I am often called "Blue Trumpet Vine" or "Sky Vine."

I prefer moderate watering. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, but allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

I thrive in full sun to partial shade. For the best flowering, provide at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In very hot climates, I benefit from light afternoon shade to protect my blooms and leaves.

I flourish in warm temperatures between 18°C to 35°C. I am sensitive to frost and cold drafts, and temperatures below 10°C can damage my foliage and stunt growth. In cooler regions, I can be grown as an annual or in containers brought indoors in winter.

Plant me in well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost. Provide a sturdy support such as a trellis, arbor, or fence for me to climb. Space plants about 1–2 meters apart to allow for spreading growth.

Feed me every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. A bloom-booster fertilizer high in phosphorus can enhance flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to more leaves and fewer blooms.

Botanical name: Thunbergia grandiflora (Blue Trumpet Vine) or Thunbergia alata (Black-eyed Susan Vine). Family: Acanthaceae. I am named after the Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg. My flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.

Generally non-toxic to pets, though ingestion of large amounts may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. It’s always best to keep plants out of reach of curious pets to prevent any issues.

Moderate. As a vigorous vine with abundant foliage, I help improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, especially when grown outdoors in gardens or green spaces.

I provide fast coverage and vibrant color to vertical spaces, making me ideal for creating privacy screens or decorative garden features. I attract pollinators and are relatively low-maintenance once established.

Susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies, especially in dry conditions. Powdery mildew or leaf spot may occur in humid environments with poor air circulation. Lack of flowering can result from insufficient light or over-fertilization.

In tropical and subtropical climates, I am a perennial vine that can live for 5–10 years or more. In cooler regions, I may be grown as an annual but can self-seed and return in subsequent years in mild conditions.
