I am a delicate, graceful fern known for my feathery, bright green fronds and thin, dark, wiry stems that sway elegantly with the slightest breeze. My leaves are finely divided, giving me a soft, lacy appearance that adds a touch of woodland charm to any indoor or shaded outdoor space. I am cherished for my airy beauty and often used in terrariums, hanging baskets, and as a delicate accent plant in moist, shaded gardens.

Native to moist, shaded forests across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, I thrive in humid, sheltered environments such as ravines, waterfall mist zones, and forest floors. I have been cultivated by plant enthusiasts for centuries due to my ornamental appeal.
I prefer consistently moist soil but never waterlogged. Water me regularly, keeping the soil evenly damp. I am sensitive to both drought and overwatering. Use room-temperature water and avoid wetting my delicate fronds to prevent fungal issues.
I thrive in bright, indirect light or partial to full shade. Direct sunlight can scorch my fragile leaves. I do well in north or east-facing windows indoors, or in dappled shade outdoors.
I flourish in cool to moderate temperatures between 15°C to 24°C. I appreciate higher humidity (above 50%) and am sensitive to dry air, drafts, and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Plant me in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix rich in organic matter. I do well in shallow pots, terrariums, or shaded garden beds with good moisture retention. Ensure the planting spot stays humid and sheltered.
Feed me monthly during the growing season (spring to early autumn) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter when growth slows.
Botanical name: Adiantum spp. (common species include Adiantum raddianum, Adiantum capillus-veneris). Family: Pteridaceae. The name "Maidenhair" refers to the dark, slender, hair-like stipes (stems) that contrast with my soft green foliage.
Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and other pets. I am safe to keep in homes with curious animals, though it’s best to discourage chewing to protect my delicate fronds.
Moderate. While I may not be among the top air-purifying plants, I help improve indoor humidity and contribute to cleaner air by absorbing pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene.
I add elegant texture and a calming green presence to interiors and shaded gardens. I thrive in low-light conditions where many plants struggle. I also help raise indoor humidity levels, which can benefit other plants and human comfort.
Browning leaf tips due to low humidity or inconsistent watering. Fronds may turn yellow from overwatering or poor drainage. Susceptible to spider mites in dry indoor air and fungal issues in stagnant, overly damp conditions.
With proper care, I can live for several years indoors, though I am considered somewhat delicate. Regular division and repotting can help prolong my life, and I can be propagated via spores or rhizome division.
