I am a graceful and elegant coniferous evergreen tree, admired for my soft, feathery golden-yellow foliage that brightens up landscapes throughout the year. My pyramidal to columnar shape and vibrant color make me a popular ornamental choice for gardens, parks, and avenues. I bring a touch of warmth and radiance to both formal and natural settings, especially when planted in groups or as a focal point.

Native to North America, particularly the eastern and central United States, I have been widely cultivated in temperate regions around the world. I am a cultivated variety of the native Cypress, selected for my striking golden foliage and adaptable nature.

I prefer moderate and consistent moisture, especially when young. Water me deeply and regularly during dry spells, ensuring well-drained soil. Once established, I become fairly drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot.

I thrive in full sun. At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for maintaining my vibrant golden-yellow color. In too much shade, my foliage may turn greener and lose its characteristic brilliance.

I flourish in temperate climates and can tolerate a range of temperatures from -20°C to 30°C. I am cold-hardy and can withstand frost and snow, making me suitable for cooler regions. Extreme heat may stress me if not adequately watered.

Plant me in well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Space trees 2–4 meters apart depending on the desired density. I do well as a standalone specimen, in rows for screening, or in mixed evergreen borders.

Feed me in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreens. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive growth and weaken my structure.

Botanical name: Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Aurea' (Golden Threadleaf Sawara Cypress) or Cupressus macrocarpa 'Goldcrest' (Golden Monterey Cypress). Family: Cupressaceae. My golden foliage results from a lack of green chlorophyll pigments in parts of the leaves, allowing yellow carotenoids to dominate.

Generally non-toxic to pets, but ingestion of large amounts of foliage may cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Always monitor pets around garden plants.

Good. As an evergreen tree, I contribute to air purification by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen year-round. My foliage can also trap airborne dust and particulates.

I provide year-round color and structure to landscapes. I am excellent for creating privacy screens, windbreaks, or accent planting. I am also relatively low-maintenance and resistant to many pests and diseases.

Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Spider mites and bagworms may infest foliage in dry conditions. Browning of tips can occur due to winter burn, drought, or salt spray in coastal areas.

With proper care, I can live for 20–50 years or more, growing slowly to moderately into a mature, statuesque tree that maintains its golden hue throughout the seasons.
