Native to the rainforests of Taiwan and Hainan, I have become a beloved houseplant worldwide. I thrive in tropical and subtropical regions and are often used in landscaping in places like Florida, Southeast Asia, and parts of India.
I prefer moderate watering. Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. I am sensitive to overwatering, which can cause root rot, and underwatering, which may lead to leaf drop. Well-draining soil is essential.
I thrive in bright, indirect light but can adapt to medium to low light conditions. Direct harsh sunlight can scorch my leaves, while too little light may slow my growth and cause legginess. East or north-facing windows are ideal indoors.
I flourish in warm temperatures between 18°C to 27°C. I am sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, which can damage my leaves. I appreciate average to high humidity but can tolerate normal indoor air.
Plant me in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Choose a sturdy pot with drainage holes. I can be grown outdoors in frost-free climates in partial shade to full sun. Prune to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.
Feed me monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows. Over-fertilizing can cause salt buildup and leaf burn.
Botanical name: Schefflera arboricola (Dwarf Umbrella Tree) or Schefflera actinophylla (Australian Umbrella Tree). Family: Araliaceae. "Saflera" is a common phonetic name for Schefflera, valued for its air-purifying qualities and easy care.
Toxic to pets. My leaves and sap contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep me out of their reach.
Excellent. I am known to remove indoor air pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, and toluene, making me a beneficial plant for improving indoor air quality.
I am an effective air purifier, add lush greenery to indoor spaces, and are relatively low-maintenance. I can be shaped into trees or bushes and are often used in offices and homes for decorative and functional purposes.
Susceptible to spider mites, scale, and aphids, especially in dry indoor air. Leaf drop is often due to overwatering, underwatering, or sudden changes in temperature or light. Yellow leaves may indicate nutrient deficiency or poor drainage.
With proper care, I can live for many years as a houseplant—often 10–25 years or more. I grow moderately fast indoors and can be propagated through stem cuttings to extend my presence.
