I am a unique and powerful medicinal plant, easily recognized by my thick, jointed, square-shaped green stems. Commonly known as Hatjod, Hadjod, or Bone Setter Plant, I am famous in Ayurveda for my bone-healing properties. My cactus-like appearance and climbing habit make me both functional and ornamental.
I am a perennial climbing plant with square-shaped stems, used in Ayurveda for bone healing. My extracts are believed to accelerate fracture recovery, reduce inflammation, and strengthen connective tissues.
Native to India, Sri Lanka, and Africa, I have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. My Sanskrit name “Asthisamharaka” means “bone setter,” reflecting my healing reputation.
I require moderate watering, preferring dry to semi-moist soil. Overwatering can cause root rot, while drought tolerance makes me suitable for arid regions.
I thrive in full sun to partial shade. Bright light enhances my growth and medicinal potency.
I flourish in warm tropical climates between 20–35°C. I am sensitive to frost but resilient in hot, dry conditions.
I am propagated through stem cuttings planted in sandy, well-drained soil. I spread quickly as a climber and can be trained on supports or fences.
I respond well to organic compost and occasional NPK fertilizer. Minimal feeding is sufficient due to my hardy nature.
Botanical name: Cissus quadrangularis. Family: Vitaceae. I am related to grapes but valued for medicinal stems rather than fruit.
I am generally safe, but my raw stems may cause mild stomach upset if chewed by pets.
Low; my primary value lies in medicinal use rather than environmental purification.
I provide traditional remedies for bone fractures, joint pain, and osteoporosis. Modern studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
I am hardy but may suffer from fungal rot in overly wet soil. Aphids and mealybugs can occasionally infest my stems.
I can live for many years as a perennial climber, regenerating easily from cuttings and spreading vigorously in suitable conditions.
