All Details
I am a lush, aromatic climbing vine, cherished for my glossy, heart-shaped green leaves that are widely known as Paan (Betel Leaf). My fresh leaves are valued for their distinctive aroma, taste, and cultural importance. With my soft trailing habit and vibrant foliage, I bring both beauty and tradition to gardens and courtyards.
I am a tropical evergreen vine producing glossy, heart-shaped leaves used for chewing and rituals. My leaves are aromatic, mildly spicy, and valued in cultural traditions across India and Southeast Asia.
Native to South and Southeast Asia, I have been cultivated in India for centuries. I am deeply tied to cultural practices like paan chewing, weddings, and religious offerings.
I require regular watering to keep my soil moist, as I thrive in humid conditions. Drought stresses me quickly, so consistent moisture is essential.
I grow best in partial shade, as direct harsh sunlight can scorch my leaves. Shade nets or natural canopy planting help me flourish.
I thrive in warm tropical climates between 20–35°C. I am sensitive to frost and cold winds, so I need protection in cooler regions.
I am usually propagated through vine cuttings planted in fertile, well-drained soil. I need support structures like trellises or poles to climb and spread.
I respond well to organic manure and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Balanced feeding ensures lush, aromatic leaves suitable for chewing.
Botanical name: Piper betle. Family: Piperaceae. I am related to black pepper (*Piper nigrum*), but cultivated for my leaves.
My leaves are generally safe in small amounts, but chewing with lime or supari is not suitable for pets.
Moderate; my dense foliage helps trap dust and improve humidity in shaded gardens.
I provide aromatic leaves for chewing (paan), cultural rituals, and traditional medicine. My leaves are used as mouth fresheners, digestive aids, and in Ayurveda.
I am prone to fungal leaf spot, root rot, and insect pests in humid conditions. Proper ventilation and organic sprays help protect me.
I can live 5–10 years with proper care, continuously producing leaves for harvest. My vines regenerate easily from cuttings, ensuring long-term cultivation.
