I am Furcraea, the dramatic sculptural sentinel of arid landscapes. My bold rosette of long, sword-shaped leaves with fierce marginal teeth and towering flower spike create a prehistoric, architectural statement perfect for xeriscapes and focal points.
I am a large, evergreen perennial succulent, closely related to agaves, forming a striking rosette and known for my monumental flower stalk that blooms once in many years (monocarpic), after which the main plant dies.
Native to tropical regions of the Americas, from Mexico to the Caribbean and northern South America.
Water deeply but infrequently. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Extremely drought-tolerant and prone to rot with overwatering.
Requires full sun for best form and growth. Tolerates light shade.
Thrives in warm to hot climates (20-35°C). Can tolerate light frost once established, but prolonged cold is damaging.
Plant in very well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. Provide ample space for its large spread. Excellent for rock gardens and dry slopes.
Feed sparingly, once a year in spring, with a diluted balanced fertilizer for succulents.
Botanical name: Furcraea spp. (e.g., Furcraea foetida, Furcraea selloa); Common names: Mauritius Hemp, Giant Cabuya; Family: Asparagaceae.
Toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested. The sap can cause skin irritation and gastrointestinal distress.
Low; primarily valued for its dramatic ornamental and architectural qualities in water-wise landscaping.
Creates an unparalleled focal point in drought-tolerant gardens; some species yield strong natural fibers; extremely low maintenance.
Root rot from overwatering or poor drainage; sharp leaf spines can be hazardous; the mother plant dies after flowering (but often produces bulbils or offsets).
Long-lived perennial that blooms once (monocarpic) after 10-30+ years, then dies. Leaves form a rosette 1-2.5 meters wide; flower stalk can reach 6-12 meters tall.
