I am Allamanda Wel, the cascading sunburst of the tropics. My long, vigorous vines are adorned with glossy, deep green leaves and spectacular, large, trumpet-shaped flowers in a brilliant, luminous yellow. I drape over walls, trellises, and pergolas with a lavish, cheerful display, transforming any support into a waterfall of golden blooms.
I am a vigorous, evergreen climbing shrub (Allamanda cathartica), prized for my rapid growth, stunning and prolific golden-yellow flowers, and ability to create lush, flowering screens and arches in warm climates.
Native to tropical South and Central America. Extensively cultivated as an ornamental vine in tropical and subtropical gardens worldwide.
Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist during the active growing and flowering season. Reduce watering in winter. Tolerates some dryness but blooms best with adequate moisture.
Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun daily) to produce the most abundant and vibrant blooms. Grows leggy and flowers poorly in shade.
A strict tropical plant. Thrives in heat and humidity (20-32°C). Very sensitive to frost and cold temperatures.
Plant in rich, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Provide a strong trellis, fence, or pergola for support. Can be grown in large containers. Space plants 1.5-2 meters apart.
Feed every 2-3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, high-potassium fertilizer to promote continuous flowering.
Botanical name: Allamanda cathartica; Common names: Golden Trumpet, Yellow Bell, Buttercup Flower; Family: Apocynaceae.
⚠️ HIGHLY TOXIC to cats, dogs, and humans. All parts of the plant contain toxic glycosides and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms if ingested. The milky sap is also a skin irritant.
Low to Moderate. Primarily valued for its spectacular ornamental impact. As a vigorous vine, it contributes to general greenery and oxygen production.
Creates stunning, fast-growing flowering screens for privacy and shade; provides a spectacular, long-season floral display; attracts butterflies and hummingbirds; excellent for covering unsightly walls or structures.
Can become invasive in ideal tropical climates if not managed. Susceptible to aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. Fungal leaf spots can occur in humid conditions. Requires regular pruning to control size and shape.
Long-lived perennial vine. With proper care, it can thrive for many years, climbing or trailing up to 3-6 meters in length.
