All Details

I am the Brahma Kamal, the celestial bloom of the Himalayas. My majestic, star-like flowers, wrapped in mystical purple-green bracts, unfurl only for a single night under the moonlight, releasing a rare, delicate fragrance. I am a solitary jewel of high-altitude meadows, shrouded in myth and revered as sacred.

I am a rare, endangered perennial herb and a high-altitude flowering plant, not a true lotus. I am celebrated for my breathtaking, ephemeral nocturnal blooms and deep spiritual significance in Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Native to the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet, found at altitudes between 3,500 to 4,800 meters. The state flower of Uttarakhand, India.

Requires consistent moisture but must have perfect drainage. Mimics cool, misty, well-drained alpine conditions. Overwatering or waterlogged soil leads to rapid rot.

Prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade. In its natural habitat, it grows in meadows with intense but often diffused high-altitude light. Cannot tolerate harsh, direct afternoon sun in lower climates.

Thrives in cool to cold temperatures (5-20°C). Requires a significant winter dormancy period with near-freezing temperatures. Cannot survive heat or frost-free winters.

Extremely challenging to cultivate outside its native alpine habitat. Requires a specialist alpine house, rock garden, or terrarium with gritty, humus-rich, acidic soil and expert care to mimic Himalayan conditions.

Very low nutrient requirements. If attempted in cultivation, a highly diluted balanced liquid fertilizer can be applied only once or twice during the very short active growing season.

Botanical name: Saussurea obvallata (True Brahma Kamal); Note: The name is also often misapplied to Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Dutchman's Pipe Cactus), which is a different night-blooming plant. Common names: Brahma Kamal, King of Himalayan Flowers, Sacred Saussurea; Family: Asteraceae.

Specific toxicity data is limited due to its rarity. As a precautionary principle with any non-food plant, supervision with pets is recommended.

Not applicable. This is a rare, outdoor alpine species not grown for indoor air purification. Its value is ecological, cultural, and spiritual.

Holds immense religious importance; offered in temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma; a subject of numerous Himalayan legends; symbolizes purity, resilience, and the attainment of the impossible; has uses in traditional Tibetan medicine.

Nearly impossible to grow in typical garden conditions; requires very specific cold alpine climate simulation; highly susceptible to rot from any excess moisture or warmth; endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and over-harvesting.

Perennial in its native habitat. Individual plants can live for many years, but flowering is an annual, fleeting event. Growth is slow, and the plant remains low to the ground.
