All Details
I am the Chiku Kalipatti, the classic sweetheart of Indian orchards. My rough, dark bark and glossy evergreen leaves shelter an abundance of small, egg-shaped brown fruits with a distinctively sweet, malty flavor and granular texture, cherished for desserts and fresh eating.
I am a traditional, highly prized cultivar of Sapodilla, specifically known for its smaller fruit size, intense sweetness, and superior aroma compared to larger varieties.
Native to Central America; the 'Kalipatti' (meaning "black leaf") variety is extensively cultivated in India, particularly in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka.
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Mature trees are drought-tolerant but need irrigation during flowering and fruit setting.
Requires full sun for healthy growth and optimal fruit production.
Thrives in warm tropical/subtropical climates (20-35°C); sensitive to frost and cold winds.
Plant in deep, well-drained sandy loam soil. Space trees 8-10 meters apart to accommodate the broad canopy.
Feed with well-rotted farmyard manure and balanced NPK fertilizer twice a year (pre-monsoon and post-monsoon).
Botanical name: Manilkara zapota 'Kalipatti'; Common names: Sapota Kalipatti, Sapodilla; Family: Sapotaceae.
The ripe fruit pulp is safe for pets, but seeds are a choking hazard and should be avoided.
High; as a large evergreen tree, it provides significant shade, improves air quality, and supports local ecosystems.
Yields delicious, energy-rich fruits consumed fresh or in milkshakes and desserts; provides excellent shade; timber is valuable; a sturdy, wind-resistant tree.
Susceptible to fruit fly and leaf miner; bark borer infestations; anthracnose fungus in humid weather.
Very long-lived; can remain productive for 40-50 years or more, growing 10-15 meters tall with a dense, rounded canopy.
