Hello, admirer of iconic greenery! I am the Monstera, your dramatic and architectural houseplant, celebrated for my magnificent, split leaves that look like nature's own artwork. I am a statement piece, bringing a bold, tropical vibe and a touch of the jungle to any interior. I'm here to grow into a stunning, larger-than-life companion that captures everyone's attention!
I am a vigorous, evergreen climbing vine with large, leathery, heart-shaped leaves that are my main attraction.
My most iconic feature is the natural holes and deep splits in my mature leaves, called fenestrations, which help me withstand heavy rain and wind in my native habitat.
I are a strong climber and develop long, aerial roots that seek support and moisture.
Juvenile plants have smaller, solid leaves; the characteristic splits develop as I mature and receive adequate light.
I am native to the tropical rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America.
I prefer to dry out slightly between waterings.
Water me thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry. I am susceptible to root rot, so good drainage is essential.
I enjoy high humidity and will benefit from regular misting or a pebble tray, but I can adapt to average home conditions.
Reduce watering in the winter when my growth slows.
I thrive in bright, indirect light.
This is the key to getting those beautiful, fenestrated leaves. Too little light, and my leaves will remain small and solid.
I can tolerate medium light, but my growth will be slower.
Avoid harsh, direct sun, which can scorch my leaves.
I enjoy warm, stable temperatures between 18°C and 27°C.
I am very sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
I am a true tropical plant and love consistent warmth.
I need a sturdy support, like a moss pole, to climb on. This encourages larger leaf growth and mimics my natural habitat.
Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix (with ingredients like peat, perlite, and orchid bark).
I am a spectacular floor plant for a bright living room, office, or sunroom.
Repot me every 1-2 years in spring as I am a relatively fast grower.
Feed me every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.
I am a moderate to heavy feeder when actively growing.
Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.
Scientific Name: Monstera deliciosa
Common Names: Swiss Cheese Plant, Split-Leaf Philodendron, Fruit Salad Plant
Plant Family: Araceae
Plant Type: Tropical evergreen climbing vine, typically grown as a houseplant
TOXIC to cats and dogs. I contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause intense oral irritation, drooling, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. Keep me out of reach of pets.
With my large, broad leaves, I am excellent at absorbing airborne pollutants and releasing oxygen, helping to purify your indoor air.
Creates an unforgettable, dramatic focal point in any room.
The fenestrated leaves are a timeless and highly sought-after design element.
A relatively fast-growing and rewarding plant when given the right conditions.
Can produce a unique, edible fruit (Monstera deliciosa) in ideal conditions, though this is rare indoors.
Yellow Leaves - Often a sign of overwatering.
Brown, Crispy Leaf Edges - Usually due to low humidity or underwatering.
Lack of Fenestrations - Caused by insufficient light.
Pests - Can be susceptible to spider mites, scale, and mealybugs, especially in dry air.
Leggy Growth - A sign that the plant is not getting enough light and is stretching to find it.
I am a long-lived and vigorous plant! With proper care, I can be a part of your home for decades, growing larger and more magnificent with each passing year. I am a true investment in indoor greenery, a living sculpture that evolves and becomes a central part of your space.
