I am the Lemon Kagdi, the indispensable, sour spark of the Indian kitchen. I am a small, thorny, evergreen tree that bears a heavy, year-round crop of small, thin-skinned, seed-filled limes. My fruit is intensely aromatic, juicy, and tart—a flavor cornerstone for curries, beverages, and home remedies.
I am a specific variety of acid lime (Citrus × aurantifolia), distinct from larger lemons. I am prized for my prolific, almost continuous fruiting, high acidity, and strong, authentic citrus flavor that is essential to regional cuisines.
Believed to have originated in Southeast Asia. Naturalized and extensively cultivated across India and other tropical regions for centuries, becoming the default "nimbu" for culinary and household use.
Requires regular watering, especially during dry spells and fruit development, but is sensitive to waterlogged conditions. Consistent moisture is key for juicy fruit.
Demands full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight) for healthy growth, flowering, and maximum fruit production.
Thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates (20-35°C). Is more cold-sensitive than lemons; frost can damage the tree and fruit.
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Due to its thorny, bushy nature, give it space or use as a natural barrier/privacy hedge. Can be grown in large containers.
Feed regularly with a citrus-specific fertilizer. Apply every 6-8 weeks during the growing season, ensuring it contains micronutrients like iron and zinc to prevent chlorosis (yellowing leaves).
Botanical name: Citrus × aurantifolia (Key Lime/Mexican Lime type); Common names: Kagzi Nimbu, Kagdi Limbu, Acid Lime, Mexican Lime, Indian Lime; Family: Rutaceae.
The fruit flesh and juice are non-toxic in small amounts. However, the essential oils in the peel and leaves can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested in large quantities. The thorns pose a physical hazard.
Moderate. As an evergreen, it contributes to oxygen production. The fragrant leaves and zest are known to have a refreshing, uplifting aromatic effect.
Provides a constant supply of vitamin C-rich fruit for cooking, drinks, and pickling; used in traditional remedies for colds and digestion; the zest and leaves are intensely fragrant; a hardy, productive tree for home gardens.
Highly susceptible to citrus canker and collar rot. Common pests include citrus leaf miners, aphids, and fruit borers. Thorny branches can make harvesting difficult. Requires consistent care for optimal health.
Long-lived perennial tree. Can remain productive for 20-30 years with good care. Typically grows as a large, dense shrub or small tree, reaching 2-4 meters in height.
