All Details
I am the Pomegranate Bhagwa, the crowned ruby of Indian orchards. My bold, crimson-red arils are exceptionally sweet, juicy, and jewel-like, encased in a strikingly red-blushed skin, making me the most sought-after commercial variety for both taste and majestic appearance.
I am a premier, early-ripening cultivar of pomegranate, specifically developed in India for its superior deep red color, high sugar content, soft seeds, and excellent shelf life, dominating the commercial market.
Developed at the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth in Maharashtra, India. Now the leading commercial variety grown across India.
Water deeply but infrequently. Drought-tolerant once established, but consistent moisture during fruit development prevents splitting and boosts size.
Requires full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily) for intense fruit color and sweetness.
Thrives in hot, dry climates with cool winters (20-35°C). Needs a period of heat for fruit ripening and cold for flowering.
Plant in deep, well-drained loamy soil. Space plants 3-4 meters apart.
Feed with a balanced NPK fertilizer and organic manure in winter and again after fruit set. High potassium improves fruit quality.
Botanical name: Punica granatum 'Bhagwa'; also known as 'Kesar' or 'Wonderful' type in India; Family: Lythraceae.
The fleshy arils (seeds) are safe for pets in moderation. However, the rind, roots, and stems are toxic if ingested in large amounts.
Moderate; as a hardy fruit shrub/tree, it contributes to garden air quality and soil health.
Produces high-yield, commercially superior fruits with antioxidant-rich, delicious arils; drought-resistant and suitable for arid landscaping; attractive ornamental plant with bright flowers and fruit.
Susceptible to fruit borers and fungal diseases like bacterial blight; fruit cracking due to irregular watering; leaf spot and aphid attacks.
Long-lived; can remain productive for 15-20 years or more. Grows as a large shrub or small tree, 2-4 meters tall.
